Understanding NDIS Funding for Support Coordination

Support coordination is funded as hours under Capacity Building, at rates set by the NDIS Pricing Arrangements, and only where the NDIA decides you need it. This guide explains where it sits in a plan, how the hours are used, and what to do if there are not enough.

Understanding NDIS Funding for Support Coordination

Support coordination is one of the few supports in a plan that has no obvious physical product, which makes its funding harder to understand than a wheelchair or a support worker shift. It is bought in hours, spent on activities you may never see, and set at a level the NDIA decides. MediHealth Connect provides NDIS support coordination across South East Queensland, and this guide explains how the money side works.

Where It Sits in Your Plan

Support coordination appears under Capacity Building, in the support category the NDIA labels Support Coordination (older plans show it under Coordination of Supports). It is a stated support: the funding can only be used for coordination, not moved to Core or other categories. The amount is expressed as a dollar figure that corresponds to a number of hours at the NDIS price limit for the level funded, whether support connection, support coordination or specialist support coordination.

How the Hours Are Used

Coordinators bill for the time they spend working on your plan: meetings with you, calls and emails to providers, reading and checking service agreements, liaising with your LAC, hospital or other agencies, writing reports and preparing for reviews. Travel can be claimed within the rules. A good coordinator agrees with you at the start how the hours will be spread across the plan, so there is time left for the review at the end, and can tell you at any point how much has been used. Ask for a statement if you are unsure.

What the Rates Are

The NDIS Pricing Arrangements set maximum hourly rates for each level of coordination, with higher limits for specialist support coordination, and providers cannot charge above them. Rates do not vary by region within Queensland. Whether you are NDIA-managed, plan-managed or self-managed makes no difference to the rate, although self-managed participants can negotiate below it.

If You Do Not Have Enough

Coordination hours run out when circumstances are more complex than the plan assumed: a hospital admission, a housing crisis, a provider collapse. If you can see the hours will not last the plan, the coordinator can request a plan variation with evidence of why more is needed. If your needs have become complex enough for specialist coordination, that is a separate request with its own evidence. Do not simply stop using coordination and hope; document the shortfall, because it is also evidence for the next review.

If It Is Not in Your Plan at All

Not every plan funds support coordination. If yours does not and you are struggling to implement it, your LAC can help in the meantime, and you can ask for coordination at your next review or through a variation. The evidence that helps is a record of services you could not arrange, provider waitlists and letters from clinicians about complexity. Our article on what happens when your plan has no support coordination covers the options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can support coordination be paid from my Core budget?

No. It is a stated support under Capacity Building and can only be paid from that allocation.

Does using a support coordinator reduce my other funding?

No. The coordination allocation is separate. Using it does not affect your Core, other Capacity Building or Capital budgets.

How do I know how many hours I have left?

Ask your coordinator for a statement, or your plan manager if you have one. Coordinators should be able to tell you what has been used and what remains at any time.
