What Happens When Your NDIS Plan Doesn't Include Support Coordination

Many NDIS plans do not fund support coordination, and participants are left to implement them alone. This guide explains what help is available without a coordinator, how to make a plan work by yourself, and how to get coordination added if you need it.

Building Independence Through NDIS Support Coordination

Support coordination is funded only where the NDIA decides a participant needs help to implement their plan, and a lot of plans arrive without it. That does not leave you with nothing, but it does mean the implementation is yours to do, with whatever help you can find. MediHealth Connect provides our support coordination service where it is funded; this guide is for participants whose plan does not include it.

Help That Is Available Without a Coordinator

Your local area coordinator (LAC) can explain your plan, point you to providers and community services and help with reviews, at no cost to your plan, although not with ongoing hands-on coordination. Your plan manager, if you have one, can explain what your budgets can buy and which providers you can use. Providers themselves will often help you set up a service. And the NDIS provider finder, along with local disability organisations, can help you build a shortlist.

Implementing the Plan Yourself

Start by reading the plan properly: what each budget is for, which supports are stated and which are flexible, and what needs a quote or report first. Decide what you need most and start there rather than trying to set up everything at once. Ring providers with a clear description of what you need, when and where, and ask directly whether they have capacity. Read every service agreement for rates, notice periods and cancellation terms before signing. Keep a simple record of what has been delivered and invoiced. Diarise the review date and start collecting evidence three months before it.

Common Problems and What to Do

Providers are full: ask to go on waitlists and look at unregistered providers if your plan management type allows them. Funding is being used too fast or too slowly: ask your plan manager for a statement and adjust. A provider is not delivering: raise it in writing, give notice under the agreement if it continues, and note it for the review. Your circumstances change: you can request a plan variation with evidence at any time; you do not have to wait for the scheduled review.

Getting Support Coordination Added

If implementing the plan alone is not working, that experience is your evidence. Keep a record of the services you could not arrange, the waitlists, the hours you have spent and any consequences, such as unused funding or a deterioration in your situation. Ask your LAC for support coordination at the next review, or lodge a plan variation request if the problem is urgent. Letters from your GP or therapists about the complexity of your supports strengthen the request. Our article on NDIS funding for support coordination explains how it is funded once approved.

When Coordination Is Clearly Needed

Several providers that need to work together, complex health needs, a recent hospital admission, unstable housing, a carer who is no longer coping or a plan that has sat largely unused for months are all signs that the NDIA's original judgement should be revisited. The scheme funds coordination for exactly these situations, and asking is not a sign of failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pay for support coordination from my Core budget if it is not in my plan?

No. Support coordination is a stated Capacity Building support and cannot be purchased from Core. You need it added to the plan.

Will my LAC coordinate my services?

LACs explain plans and connect you to services but do not provide ongoing coordination. Their role is different from a support coordinator's.

How do I ask for a plan variation?

Contact the NDIA or your LAC, explain what has changed and provide evidence. Variations for significant changes can be processed without a full review.
